a) Confirmation Saint Name Essay

1) Purpose of this assignment: 

When deciding on a Confirmation name, the goal is to choose the name of a saint you admire, can relate to, or aspire to be like. This saint will be bonded to you spiritually and will be your role model in life. They can be the ones you turn to for guidance and protection during life’s challenges. Throughout the Bible, there are many examples of people taking on new names, dating back to the Old Testament. God changed the names of many to reflect the special roles they’d play throughout the history of the Church. For example, God changed Abram’s name to Abraham meaning, “father to a host of nations.” This name change signified that God was making a covenant with Abraham that would make him the first of God’s people on earth. Simon’s name was changed to Peter, meaning “rock” and refers to Peter becoming the first pope: “And upon this rock, I will build my church” (Matthew 16:17-18)

2) How to choose a Confirmation Saint?

  • Boys must choose a Male saint
  • Girls must choose a Female saint 
  • You may search for your saint name at: www.catholic.org/saints/

3) Essay Instructions:

  • You must write an essay about the Saint you have chosen as your Confirmation Saint. 
  • Write it on a in double spaced page, using Times New Roman 12 font
  • For MIDDLE/HIGH School Students and Adults: The essay has to have a minimum of 100 words organized in three main topics.
  • For ELEMENTARY School Students: The essay has to have a minimum of 50 words organized into three main topics.
  1. Biography of the Saint you have chosen
    1. Name of the Saint and relevant historical reference, such as birthday, day of death, place of birthday, etc.
    2. When he/she was canonized, give examples of some of their miracles, are they Patrons of something in particular (i.e., Nurses, Teachers, Police, Students, etc.)?
  2. Why have you chosen this saint?
    1. This is the most important part of the essay and you need to focus on this topic.
    2. Write a reflection on how you would like to become more like your Confirmation Saint. 
    3. What concrete things can you do in your daily lives to be more like your saint (i.e., did they have a special devotion to the Eucharist, the daily rosary, taking care of the poor, teaching others the faith, etc.?  
  3. Conclusion
    1. Write a short prayer to God the Holy Spirit asking him to help you be like your Confirmation Saint.

Al decidir sobre un nombre de Confirmación, el objetivo es elegir el nombre de un santo que admira, con el que se puede relacionar o que aspira a ser. Este santo estará unido a ti espiritualmente y será tu modelo a seguir en la vida. Puede ser a quien recurra en busca de orientación y protección durante los desafíos de la vida. A lo largo de la Biblia, hay muchos ejemplos de personas que toman nuevos nombres, que se remontan al Antiguo Testamento. Dios cambió los nombres de muchos para reflejar los roles especiales que desempeñarán a lo largo de la historia de la Iglesia. Por ejemplo, Dios cambió el nombre de Abram a Abraham, que significa “padre de una multitud de naciones”. Este cambio de nombre significaba que Dios estaba haciendo un pacto con Abraham que lo convertiría en el primer pueblo de Dios en la tierra. El nombre de Simón fue cambiado a Pedro, que significa “roca” y se refiere a que Pedro se convirtió en el primer Papa: “Y sobre esta roca edificaré mi iglesia” (Mateo 16: 17-18)

  2. Cuando fue canonizado, dé ejemplos de algunos de sus milagros, ¿son patrocinadores de algo en particular (es decir, enfermeras, maestros, policías, estudiantes, etc.)?

2) ¿Por qué has elegido a este santo?

  1. Esta es la parte más importante del ensayo y debes concentrarte en este tema.
  2. Escribe una reflexión sobre cómo te gustaría ser más como tu Santo de la Confirmación.
  3. ¿Qué cosas concretas puedes hacer en tu vida diaria para parecerte más a tu santo (es decir, tenían una devoción especial a la Eucaristía, el rosario diario, el cuidado de los pobres, la enseñanza de la fe a otros, etc.?
