The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Dec. 8) is a holy day in the U.S. because it is under this title that the Mother of the Lord is our patroness — it is now always a holy day of obligation.

This year, Dec. 8 is the Second Sunday of Advent, and so has liturgical preference over the Immaculate Conception. Because of the significance of this Marian feast, its observance is moved this year to Monday, Dec. 9, 2024. And, according to a response from the Holy See to an inquiry from the U.S. bishops, the obligation is also transferred. So, Dec. 9, 2024, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is now always a holy day of obligation.
