Certification

Step #4

 Catechist Certification

Catechist Certification is granted upon completion of 50 hours of formation in the following five areas:

1. Introduction to Sacred Scripture

This course will present a basic introduction to the Sacred Scriptures. A Catholic understanding of God’s self-revelation through Scripture and Tradition. It will examine the structure and content of the Old and New Testaments and the importance of each in
Christian life and catechesis. (Course also available Online)

2. The Profession of Faith: Creed

This course will lead the learner to an understanding of the Creed as the core theological source of catechesis. It will examine the development and the church’s understanding of the nature of God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, as well as other important concepts of our Christian Catholic Faith.

3. Liturgy and Sacraments

This course invites the participant to examine, understand and appreciate the liturgy of the Church as it is celebrated through the Sacraments and prayer. Special attention will be given to the Sacraments as signs of God’s grace and as a response to God’s call to a rich life in the Catholic community. (Course is also available Online)

4. Catholic Morality: Life in Christ

This course invites the catechist into a loving relationship with God in Christ. It will present the dignity of the person, the moral responsibility conferred on us by God’s gift of freedom, the process of conscience formation, the social teaching of the church and the personal and social responsibility to live in justice as members of the Catholic Christian community and stewards of God’s creation.

5. The Ministry of Catechesis

This course is designed to promote the mission and vision of catechesis. It will examine the vocation of catechist and the qualities and skills needed to be a catechist. The participant will be introduced to psychological elements of human and faith development,
and the methods of catechizing according to the stages of faith development. The National Directory for Catechesis will be used as backdrop to present catechetical praxis.
